Social Media

As we all know, these social networking sites took the online world by storm. Even kids nowadays are able to use them. In this article, I have checked and compiled the advantages and disadvantages of using social network sites. Let’s go!

Advantages of social media

1. Easily contact family and friends

It is very easy to contact family members, relatives and friends. When we want to discuss something or when we just want to say hi to our friends, we just need a few clicks and we can have a good conversation instantly. People can chat whenever they like, whatever they like and wherever they want to. You can relate to this especially if you have loved ones in another country.

2. Current events worldwide

Terrorist attack in Paris. New Hollywood movie is being made. Conflict in Syria. National Basketball Association Finals MVP LeBron James. Newborn panda in China. Almost all happening in every country can be searched. That is why some of us now don’t watch news on televisions anymore. Because of the social media, you can still be updated on the current events happening worldwide.

3. Meeting places

Want to have a meeting but your business partners are overseas? No problem! Just make a chat or conference call. No need to find a location and go there personally. You can do your meeting online. Just schedule a time for the meeting with a good internet connection and you can still have an effective meeting.

4. Join groups

Need a research on something? Just search for a keyword plus the word group. And poof! You can find and join a group of like-minded people and you can ask for their help. Academic, Financial, Dating, Engineering, Parenting, the list goes on. I’m pretty confident you will find your desired group.

5. Sharing of information

If your passion is to share your knowledge, you can share information through social networking by giving away free tutorials, lessons and tips. You can also share your personal experiences and the places you have been at. You are contributing greatly to the society by sharing information. Disadvantages of social media

1. Grammar

Admit it! You sometimes don’t care anymore if you are typing the correct grammar and spelling. Especially for someone like me, English is not my native language. So if we constantly practice errors on grammar and misspelling of words, we won’t be able to master the English language. More importantly nowadays that writing and speaking in English is a good instrument if you want to compete globally.

2. Time

Observe yourself. Are you constantly browsing the news feed? Checking out the posts of your friends or some people you don’t even know? Scrolling up and down. Then you realize you were already late for work. You’ve wasted your precious time.

3. Privacy

By signing up to these social networking sites, you are giving away your personal information to the developer. When you post your photos, anyone will be able to check you. (That is if you don’t know how to set up you privacy). Anyone can copy whatever you post in these sites. Some yank might steal your personal information and use them maliciously.

4. Hostile response

When you post your ideas, there will always be someone who disagrees. Depending on what you have stated in your post, you might get a hostile response.  Especially in hot topics like politics or religion.

Final thoughts

I believe that the social media was made for us to use it in a civilized manner.  I believe that the social media developers made it easier for us to communicate and to share our precious memories and knowledge.
